Big John

Big John is widely recognized as the pioneer of Japanese denim and is credited with establishing the selvedge denim manufacturing industry in Kojima, Okayama, which has now gained global fame. The founder, Kotaro Ozaki, initially started his business by producing school uniforms, workwear, and clothing inspired by the U.S military. In 1965, Kotaro gained recognition for creating the first-ever pair of jeans entirely manufactured in Japan, using fabric sourced from Canton Textile Mills in America, and branding it as ‘Canton’. In 1972, he further revolutionized the industry by developing the first denim fabric made in Japan. Big John’s contributions have played a significant role in shaping the Japanese Selvedge Denim scene as we know it today.
